Rebuilding New Orleans: Common Ground Relief

by

Join a grass-roots effort to support the residents of New Orleans and Gulf Coast Communities as they rebuild. Common Ground needs volunteers skilled in construction, dry wall hanging, carpentry, painting, roofing, plumbing, electrical work, legal aid, social work, media/PR, and computer technology. Both short-and long-term volunteers are needed. The goal is to rebuild a socially equitable and environmentally sustainable New Orleans.

Its facilities, including offices and housing, are in the Lower 9th Ward. Communal housing is provided for all volunteers. You will have a bunk bed, cot, or space for your sleeping bag or pad, in houses renovated by Common Ground. There are shared bathrooms with showers on-site and they provide three meals a day, including vegetarian and vegan choices.

Check the Project Areas section on Common Ground’s Web site and indicate your preference(s) when registering. There are travel directions, a map, and answers to frequently asked questions on the Web site, as well as a packing list. Download an application or request one by e-mailing the volunteer coordinator, and allow one week for a response after submitting your application.
