The beauty of an Immersion Traveler® on a volunteer vacation is that there’s always a new adventure around the corner. In June, 2015 I read about the new partnership between fathom.org and Carnival Cruise Lines offering cultural immersion and volunteer trips working together with community partners in the Dominican Republic and Cuba. I’ve planned many trips with about 36 people at a time, but having about 700 people per ship actually working on participatory projects all at one time? Wow, I wrote to the CEO to ask how I could best contribute my skills. She connected me with the HR director. When I read the description for the job of Impact Guide, I knew I’d found my place. Impact Guides reach out to meet groups of about 25 travelers before the trip, engage with them before, during and after their experiences, share information about the culture and what we will be doing in each port, and facilitate discussion groups and workshops. The job description definitely had my name on it and included everything I love to do. Cuba has been closed to United States travelers by sea for 50 years. It will be very exciting to be part of this wonderful historic opportunity. Stay tuned for more details. Now I’m on my way to practice speaking Spanish in a conversational group that meets in my local library
